Movies again!

2 min read
X-Men: First Class this time. Just saw it, and I am on an absolute high about it. Really, I have no idea how good this movie was. I suspect it wasn't all that clever, just a fairly cliché re-tread of old ground, and I am about as fed up of alternate Cuban Missile Crises as I am of zombies right now, but it was still the most fun I've had in a cinema for a long time.

Why? Why, nerdery, of course! One or two people here know that I've loved X-Men since I was a tiny sprog and used to watch the 80s cartoons with my dad even before I was really old enough to know what was going on, and I have always loved the franchise. This movie pushed all the right buttons, and the Charles and Erik button in particular. The relationship between Xavier and Magneto is one of the most awesome things in modern fiction and I love love loved it in this movie.

Hate how they messed up Moira, though. She is a crazy Scottish scientist, not a foxy American CIA agent. There was one second of pure brilliance when they almost made up for this character screw-up which I won't spoil, but the she opened her mouth again and totally failed to have a Scots brogue and I was saddened. Banshee was rather lacking in accent, too. In fact, there was a general avoidance of regional British accents...

But yeah, if you like X-Men, go see this movie, you'll love it. If you don't like X-Men, I'm afraid I don't know whether I can recommend it to you at all - I was far too blinded by geeking out to actually keep track of whether this was a good movie or not!

Anyone know any good X-Men RP sites in need of new blood?

Bullying is dreadful whatever form it takes.

I'm sure this big dA support for Spirit Day is making a lot of LGBT kids sitting at home with their computers feel stronger and less alone, but how rotten for everyone else out there to be told that because what they're being bullied for isn't trendy, no one cares.

In the UK, we have Anti-Bullying Week that covers being bullied for being smart or working hard or being ginger or anything else that kids can be cruel about. No one's excluded from the support you get there. How about we all go and show the love to them instead?

Inception

2 min read
So apparently this journal is all about my trips to the cinema these days, but this one definitely warrants it.

Inception is an absolutely breathtaking movie. After a few big CG tricks at the start it settles into some seriously incredible and in some ways surprisingly understated action sequences, but you're really not going to see this film for the spectacle, it's all about the mental workout.

It's not too hard to follow the plot, but following what people are saying is pretty much impossible the first time round. The beauty of the script and the directing is that it doesn't matter. They'll explain a rule of the world and you'll get the gist of it like you did watching Shakespeare at school, but a few minutes later they'll give you an example of that rule in action and the half understood words will kick into place guided by the fantastic atmosphere and suddenly you'll understand what was going on and feel like the smartest person in the room.

This film's all about the subconscious and the way it plays with yours as you watch it, both as part of the plot and on a far more meta level, is just brilliant.

Oh, and that ending. Muah, beautiful.

Gen Con next week. What will my dA journal hear about it? Probably the films I watch on the plane. Fingers crossed for Iron Man 2 and Kick Ass. ;)

Ps, fangirls, you can keep Arthur. Eames <3

No Pixar, I haven't forgiven you for the late release in the UK.

I did, however, love this film. Very entertaining, and a massive tearjerker in a fantastic way. 9.8 out of 10.

10 out of 10 to that gorgeous short, though. That was absolutely fantastic, both in concept and execution. Even if the movie itself wasn't such a good film, it would be worth going to see for this short alone.

Toy Story 3...

... might be a great movie, but who the hell knows since we can't see it in the UK for another TWO WEEKS.

Seriously, what happened to international release dates, and do they realise how much viral hype they're missing out on what with, y'know, every American with an internet connection talking about that movie?

Really, really not a smooth move there, Pixar.
